COBAS-6800 machine ordered for coronavirus testing

A new state-of-the-art COBAS-6800 machine has been introduced for more testing of the coronavirus, which has been given to NCDC. Now sample testing will be done on COBAS-6800 in NCDC lab. This state-of-the-art machine can test 1200 samples in 24 hours. This will not only allow multiple tests to take place simultaneously but will also eliminate pendency.

Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan gave this machine to NCDC on Thursday. He said, “Because this machine is equipped with robotics, there will be no risk to any kind of infection especially to the health care worker. At the same time, this test will also be more in number and will produce results soon.

The COBAS 6800 machine requires a minimum BSL2 + control level lab for testing. Therefore it cannot be kept at any facility. COBAS-6800 can detect viral hepatitis B & C, HIV, MTB (both rifampicin and isoniazid resistance), papilloma, CMV, chlamydia, neceremia, among others. Till Thursday, 20 lakh samples were taken in the country and it has been investigated. India now has the capacity to do one lakh sample tests daily.
