New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called 99-year-old Ratnabhai Thummar, a former Gujarat MLA, and praised him for donating his savings to fight against the Coronavirus epidemic. Their conversation lasted for about three minutes. In his conversation, Narendra Modi mentioned that he once visited Thummar’s house in Bilkha town in Junagadh district in Gujarat.

According to a release issued by the state government, Prime Minister Modi told Ratnabhai Thummar, “I have called you for that (donation). You are doing good at this age. Take care of your health.” Modi asked Thummar if he remembered him, to which Thummar replied yes.

The Prime Minister inquired about Thummar’s health, who is now unable to hear properly. According to a relative, Thummar advised Modi to fight against the Coronavirus with full force. Ratnabhai Thummar went to Junagadh District Collector’s office on 17 April and handed over a check of Rs 51,000 to the state government.

He was an MLA during 1975–1980. It is said that at that time he did not take the salary he got as an MLA. Ratnabhai Thummar does not even take the pension he is entitled to as a former MLA.
